Barbaro vs. Bernardini

In the only Daily Racing Form story that my coworkers will read (or care about) this year, we were told that Barbaro's leg can fully support his full weight.

Speaking of Barbaro, Dan Illman has done a look at Barbaro vs. Bernardini on his FormBlog.

Illman compares Bernardini's six wins this season where he defeated 11 stakes winners and 9 graded winners with Barbaro's four victories this year where he defeated a staggering 25 stakes-winners, 17 of which were graded stakes winners. Keep in mind that a majority of Barbaro's winners were faced in the Kentucky Derby, so if you don't count the Derby it brings his numbers down to earth -- but why wouldn't you count the Derby?

Illman's stellar research reveals the following numbers:

Bernardini
1/7/06 maiden special weight - didn't win
3/4/06 maiden special weight - no past or future stakes-winners*
4/29/06 Withers - no past or future stakes-winners**

Hell of a post by Illman.

Illman doesn't note:
* High Finance, who was on the early Derby Trail, placed.
**Doc Cheney was the runner up in this race. Doc Cheney later came in second to Showing Up in the Dweyer (GII); he also finished 9th in the Florida Derby -- won by Barbaro.

I think that Barbaro should be 3yo of the year. That being said, shouldn't the Breeders Cup Classic also be included when using number of stakes winners that each horse has beaten?
Just asking.

No, since Illman was only looking at horses that were defeated in WINS this season. Since Berardini placed, and didn't win (although still finishing ahead of several horses) that is why Illman didn't count them.

If you were going to look at who Invasor beat (which I may do later) then yes, you include the Breeders' Cup Classic.
