Exciting weekend

All three-year olds don't retire, and this weekend will bring back some ghosts of the past year who thankfully didn't retire after three.

Reaching way back into the "oh my goodness I forgot about him"-files, I see that a horse I liked for the 2005 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Sorcerer's Stone will be racing late today in the 8th at Delta Downs, a 26K OC where he is the 2-1 favorite.

Also, we have a couple of big favorites in a few more optional claimers. Belmont winner, Jazil (2-5) will also race today in the 8th at AQUEDUCT (1m 1/6, $40K OC) and then on Saturday, a horse that fell off the Derby trail early, Music School, is the 3-1 morning line favorite in a 6 furlong $35K OC.

Another race later tomorrow, the 9th at Gulfstream, will feature two big boys. Sweetnorthernsaint and Strong Contender will be the 120 pound heavyweights (and likely co-favorites) in the GIII Hal's Hope Handicap. I'd note that Sweetnorthernsaint had a hell of workout on New Year's Eve, working 4 furlongs in :46.80 (C-Quay points out that Barbaro had a similar work prior to the Derby).

In workout news, we've seen recent works from Achilles of Troy, Keyed Entry, Cotton King, Scrappy T, Private Vow, Lawyer Ron, and one of my wife's favorite: Steppenwolfer. It will be nice to see all of these guys start racing again.

as a matter of style, I love the bolding of horses. like a good gossip column, it draws the eye to the particular party you'd like to stalk. of course in racing you'd like to bring the stalkers. I mean, the folks after Letterman alone could double the gate at some tracks.

I've been keeping an eye on Achilles of Troy too (despite his inaccurate name) -- it will be interesting to see where he pops up.

Nice to see Sweetnorthernsaint back too.
